Matthew H. McKinney is a member of BrownWinick and chairs the firm’s nationally-recognized Government Relations practice group. In addition to a robust and award-winning government relations practice, Matthew is active in the firm’s litigation and data security practice groups. Beyond his daily practice, Matthew frequently works with, and consults on, election matters and campaigns as well as writes on numerous business law matters. Finally, you may come across Matthew as he presents to broad audiences throughout the State of Iowa on data security and privacy matters.
Matthew graduated from the University of Iowa in 2004, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and the University of Iowa Business School’s Certificate in Entrepreneurship. Thereafter, Matthew received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Creighton University School of Law, while also earning certificates of concentration in litigation, and criminal law and procedure. Matthew was the sole recipient of the David A. Svoboda Trial Advocacy award, recognizing excellence in trial advocacy.
Prior to joining BrownWinick in 2010, Matthew worked with Tiffany & Bosco, P.A., in Phoenix, Arizona, on complex litigation matters, including derivative shareholder disputes. Matthew is a former prosecutor, serving the State of Iowa as an Assistant Polk County Attorney under the direction of John P. Sarcone.
Matthew is admitted to practice in state courts in the State of Iowa (admitted 2007) and the State of Arizona (admitted 2008). Additionally, he is admitted to practice in Iowa Federal District Court (northern and southern divisions) as well as in Colorado Federal District Court.
Matthew is an active member of the Iowa and Polk County Bar Associations and serves the following organizations: West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Board and Executive Committee member (Vice Chairman in 2018); United Way of Central Iowa Policy Cabinet; Greater Des Moines Partnership Government Policy Council; West Des Moines Sister Cities Commission; West Des Moines Historical Society Board; West Des Moines Due Diligence Committee; Heritage Bend Board and President; and he regularly assists with numerous campaigns.
Matthew is a graduate of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy, the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, and Leadership Iowa. He was also recognized in 2014 by the Des Moines Business Record as a “Forty under 40” and in 2017 and 2018 by Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” in the area of Government Relations.
