Specialties

As Counsel at BrownWinick law firm, I focus primarily on tax controversy matters, making sure my clients do not pay more than they justifiably owe. I spent over a decade working in state government in various legal roles and two years at a public accounting firm where I focused on state and local tax issues. I use this background to help other areas of BrownWinick’s practice, especially regarding business planning and transactions, utilities, other administrative and regulatory issues, and government relations.

My Approach

I love solving complex problems and making sure the solution is the best fit for my clients. There are lots of ways to solve most problems, and my experience gives me the tools I need to find the right path to resolution and to put my clients on track for success going forward. One of my keys to success is being honest and clear about my clients’ expectations. Can I always make all problems disappear? No. But will I do everything I can to get a result that works best for my clients? Absolutely.

I have advocated for my clients from a variety of perspectives: as a tax practitioner in disputes with tax authorities, as a government attorney enforcing the law, as a legislative liaison educating policymakers and elected officials. I have worked with clients in nearly every industry, including construction, manufacturing, technology, financial services, retail, and nonprofits. In addition to deep knowledge of sales and use taxes, my tax expertise extends to include insurance premium taxes (including captives or for surplus line purchases), property taxes and related replacement taxes, vehicle registration fees and taxes, motor fuel and electric vehicle taxes, other excise taxes, and credits and incentives for all tax types.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa in 2008, majoring in political science and music, and my Juris Doctor from Drake University in 2011. I live in the Des Moines area with my wife and our two young boys. I love being outside and staying active.
