I am a member at BrownWinick law firm. I provide my clients with timely solutions to complicated employment law, labor law, and general business matters. I provide direct, pragmatic advice and counsel to businesses in Iowa and throughout the country.

I am proud to maintain a full-service employment law practice. This practice includes counseling businesses on their rights and obligations under federal, state, and local employment laws, including civil rights laws, discrimination laws, disability, accommodation, and leave laws, non-competes and other restrictive covenants, and wage and hour law. I assist businesses with every facet of human resources law, such as policy, procedure, and handbook reviews, employee relations matters, complaint handling and investigation, and compliance matters. I also represent clients in employment-related litigation and appeals, including administrative proceedings and complaints before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Department of Labor (DOL), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Iowa Civil Rights Commission (ICRC), and others, and in lawsuits in state and federal court.

I also represent businesses in traditional labor law matters, including union representation matters, union negotiations, and union contract administration. I also represent and appear on behalf of employers in unfair labor practice matters before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

In addition to my labor and employment law focus, I provide outside general counsel services to many of the firm’s clients. This service includes day-to-day legal reviews, analysis, and feedback, planning, operational reviews, and issue identification, triage, and management. For these clients, I serve as a single point of contact for the firm’s many excellent practice areas, managing ongoing projects and providing stability, continuity, and predictability for your business. I am committed to learning, understanding, and helping to grow your business and achieve your objectives.

My Approach

I rely on my diverse background, which includes the years I spent as a trial lawyer with the most successful plaintiff's labor and employment litigation firms in the state, and the time I spent as an Assistant United States Attorney, investigating and litigating a variety of fraud and civil rights cases under an affirmative civil enforcement program. This background provides me with a keen eye for spotting potential claims, or a need to adjust existing practices, and the ability to provide actionable advice to move your business forward.

More About Me

I am an Iowa native and have lived in central Iowa my entire life. Like many Iowans, I was raised to value hard work, commitment, and candor.

Before going to law school, I worked in information technology and systems administration for a high-tech venture in West Des Moines. In 2009, I graduated from Upper Iowa University with a B.S. in Public Administration with an emphasis in law enforcement. In 2013, I earned my law degree from Drake University Law School, with high honors, and completed certificates in health law and litigation and dispute resolution. After graduation, I was admitted to the Iowa bar, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and recently the U.S District Courts for the District of Nebraska and the Central District of Illinois.

Since 2019, I have been recognized by Best Lawyers for my employment litigation practice. I am a past chair of the Litigation Section of the Iowa State Bar Association. I routinely serve on the Litigation Section and Labor and Employment Law Section Legislative Committees, and I am a member of the Litigation Section and Labor and Employment Law Section Councils. I frequently serve as a grader for the Iowa Board of Law Examiners.

I also strive to give back to my community. I currently serve as the chair of the Clive Library Board, and previously served on the Iowa Dependent Adult Protective Advisory Council and the Iowa Landscape Architectural Examining Board.
