I want to be known as a lawyer who assists my clients in reaching their goals while caring about them as individuals. Striving to always exhibit the highest level of integrity and character, I want to be there when my clients need me most. By meeting quick deadlines, efficiently solving problems, and being very responsive, my clients can both trust and depend on me. I think humor and genuine humility can get people through stressful situations, and I try to utilize both.

My Approach

As a long-time in-house attorney and former General Counsel, I was able to advise many senior leaders. These decision-makers desire a thoughtful yet concise legal recommendation within their often-tight deadlines. Risks are inherent; they just need to be properly identified and managed. With my vast and deep corporate experience, I know firsthand the pressures many leaders face within their organizations. Answering my client's legal questions while being ready to provide business advice in a calm and reassuring manner is what clients want. I am here, ready to passionately deliver results for my clients.

More About Me

I grew up in a small town in northwest Iowa and eventually left to play baseball on the collegiate level for Buena Vista University where I earned my B.A. In 1988, I earned a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law, and thereafter, I worked for a large Des Moines law firm. From 1992 until 2018, I worked as an in-house attorney for various companies (Wellmark, Principal Financial, and Wells Fargo). Most recently, I served as General Counsel for Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative, a health plan in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. Growing the Legal, Compliance and Audit Department from three to seven professionals, I led and contributed to the stability, profitability, and development of the organization. I am a Certified Health Insurance Executive (CHIE) through AHIP and Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) through HCCA.

I organized, chaired, and spoke at many continuing legal education seminars for in-house attorneys as well as served on the Board of the Iowa Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel - both as Treasurer and Secretary - for over 15 years. Also, I am involved in many church organizations; serve on a non-profit board for children; and lead a boys group from late elementary through high school.

As a devoted husband and father of seven, I coached virtually every sport but soccer, enough for “Coach” to almost become my second name. I've also been very involved in the junior high mock trial program.
