BrownWinick’s Community Engagement Committee recently hosted a Cinco De Mayo-themed cornhole tournament and reception with all proceeds supporting Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center (EMBARC). BrownWinick attorneys and staff enjoyed the friendly competition and festivities all while supporting a worthy cause.
In total, more than 15 teams participated in the tournament. The tournament along with donations for the lunch and a reception resulted in approximately $615 being raised. The money raised for EMBARC will go towards providing assistance to refugee families in Iowa including access to food, education, training, and healthcare.
In the end, teams What the Shuck, consisting of staff members Paige Dixson and Sara Cox, and the Pike Assassins, consisting of attorneys Chris Nuss and Adam Van Dike, faced off in the final game to determine who would be the ultimate cornhole champion team. Team What the Shuck won the final matchup winning two out of three games!

EMBARC is a grassroots, community-based, nonprofit founded by refugees for refugees. EMBARC was founded in 2012 and is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Des Moines, Iowa.
As refugees from Burma came to Iowa after fleeing from the seventy-year-long civil war in Burma, more and more refugee families were needing assistance with day-to-day tasks. Three organizations, The Karen Association of Iowa, The Chin Baptist Church, and the Karenni Association, along with Henny Ohr came together to form EMBARC to support refugees through advocacy, education, and community development.
