Government Relations Update - 2022 General Election - 11-02-22

Written by BrownWinick | Nov 4, 2022 3:30:56 PM

As the 2022 general election is less than one week away, candidates across the state are making their final push for support. At the federal level, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R) is running for his eighth term in the U.S. Senate. He is being challenged by retired Navy Admiral Mike Franken (D). A recent Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll found Grassley up by three percentage points in what looks to be his closest race since he defeated Sen. John Culver (D) in 1980. Additionally, all four congressional races are on the ballot with all but CD 4 looking to be competitive:

  • CD 1: U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) vs. State Rep. Christina Bohannon (D)
  • CD 2: U.S. Rep. Ashely Hinson (R) vs. State Sen. Liz Mathis (D)
  • CD 3: U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne (D) vs. State Sen. Zach Nunn (R)
  • CD 4: U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R) vs. Ryan Melton (D) vs. Bryan Holder (L)

Governor Kim Reynolds leads the statewide GOP ballot as she seeks to be elected to her second full term. Reynolds is being challenged by small business owner Deidre DeJear. The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll had Reynolds leading DeJear by 17 percentage points. Other statewide races include:

  • Secretary of State: Sec. Paul Pate (R) vs. Linn County Auditor Joel Miller (D)
  • Auditor of State: Auditor Rob Sand (D) vs. Todd Halbur (R)
  • Treasurer of State: Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald (D) vs. State Sen. Roby Smith (R)
  • Secretary of Agriculture: Sec. Mike Naig (R) vs. John Norwood (D)
  • Attorney General: Attorney General Tom Miller (D) vs. Brenna Bird (R)

With 26 legislators retiring, 12 others seeking other offices, and a handful losing in the June primaries, there will be significant turnover at the Iowa Statehouse. One hundred and thirty-four state legislative seats will be on the ballot with 89 of these being contested (66%). There will be a minimum of 41 entirely new members in the Iowa Legislature, with the potential to have more than 50 new members.

 Senate By-the-Numbers:
  • 34 of 50 seats on the ballot (68%)
  • 8 uncontested seats (24%)
  • 26 contested seats (76%)
  • 13 seats will be entirely new to the Senate (26%)
  • 1 open committee: State Government
