Government Relations Update - 06-08-22

Written by BrownWinick | Jun 9, 2022 4:42:00 PM

Primary election results for numerous statewide and legislative races are in.  In federal election news, Mike Franken defeated Abby Finkenauer to become the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.  Franken will challenge current U.S. Senator Charles Grassley who defeated Jim Carlin in the Republican primary. Additionally, Zach Nunn won a three-way primary against Nicole Hasso and Gary Leffler to become the GOP candidate for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District. Nunn will run against current U.S. Representative Cindy Axne in November’s general election. Following this result, the Cook Political Report moved the race from “toss-up” to “leans R”.

In-state legislative news, primaries were held in all 100 State House seats and 34 State Senate seats. Generally, each election cycle places 25 seats on the ballot.  However, nine more seats were on the ballot due to redistricting. The House primaries included three races that pitted sitting incumbents against each other.  Reps. Dean Fisher (over Dave Maxwell), Steve Bradley (over Lee Hein), and Jeff Shipley (over Joe Mitchell) all secured victories. Seven other primaries featured incumbent legislators being challenged with Reps. Dennis Bush, Jon Thorup, and Dustin Hite coming up short. In the Senate, incumbents Dave Rowley, Molly Donahue, and Liz Bennett won their primary elections.

Election winners for each primary are highlighted below. Of note, these results are unofficial until certified.
