Construction companies face human resources ("HR") issues throughout the year. These can be small items or issues that can test the very existence and viability of your company. They can also be forward-looking in that you are considering steps to transition your business to others over time. Regardless, legal guidance, along with training for members of your construction team, can help manage these HR issues so that you can best position  yourself for moving forward.

Description:  This presentation will cover best practices for responding to a Department of Homeland Security audit and other inquiries.

10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

  • Mental Health in the Workplace: How to Get a Grip / Speaker: Ann Holden Kendell, BrownWinick Attorney

Description:  Analysis of current laws pertaining to mental health in the workplace and will include a discussion on practical solutions for managing struggling employees.

11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

  • Employee Retention through Attractive and Affordable Benefit Plans / Speaker: Alice Helle, BrownWinick Attorney

Description:  This session will focus on current employee benefit topics of interest to contractors and will include a discussion of the new MBI Association Health Plan, subject to approval by the Iowa Insurance Division.

Description:  This presentation will provide an overview on some of the recent changes in federal and state workplace safety laws that could directly affect the construction industry. It will include an analysis of recent federal and state / administrative case law. Finally, a discussion will take place on certain upcoming safety considerations / trends as well as potential future legislative action to look out for.

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

  • High Stakes: Lessons Learned from Litigation / Speakers: BrownWinick Panel

Description:  Review of recent verdicts and case law in employment cases; revisit employment cases arising in the construction industry, all with the aid of learning practical action steps to take to avoid making the same mistakes.
