  • Common Wage and Hour Issues and How to Avoid Them / Presenter: Michael Staebell, District Director, U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division / Companionship Services Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
    • Michael Staebell is the District Director for the US Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division in Des Moines. The Des Moines District Office encompasses Iowa and Nebraska. Mike has been with the Wage and Hour Division for 30 years, as an investigator in Des Moines and Waterloo, and in his current position. In addition to supervising the District Office staff, he regularly gives presentations to the public, and has served as a national trainer for Wage and Hour on the Fair Labor Standards Act, Total Quality Management, Family and Medical Leave Act, Litigation Preparation, and Investigator Basic Training.

      About the WHD: The Wage and Hour Division (WHD) enforces Federal minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act. WHD also enforces the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, the Employee Polygraph Protection Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, wage garnishment provisions of the Consumer Credit Protection Act, and a number of employment standards and worker protections as provided in several immigration related statutes. Additionally, WHD administers and enforces the prevailing wage requirements of the Davis Bacon Act and the Service Contract Act and other statutes applicable to Federal contracts for construction and for the provision of goods and services.
