Christopher L. Nuss, Attorney at Law
Christopher L. Nuss is a member of BrownWinick. Chris primarily assists clients
in areas of federal, state and local tax planning, compliance and controversies
and advises clients on a variety of business transactional issues.
Chris has advised small and large businesses in major aspects of federal income
taxation, including issues relating to choice of entity, asset and stock acquisitions
and divestitures, mergers and pass-through taxation. Chris has supported the development
and execution of strategies for significant litigation with the Internal Revenue
Service and has managed various state and local tax audits and projects, including
sales and use and property tax exemptions. He has represented clients in tax aspects
of commercial mortgage-backed securitizations, primarily 'real estate mortgage
investment conduits,' debt-for-debt exchanges and low-income housing tax credits.
Chris has also successfully obtained tax-exempt status for nonprofit organizations
and addressed issues on unrelated business income, public charity status, private
foundations and state and local taxes.
Prior to joining BrownWinick, Chris was employed at the Principal Financial Group.
Chris also practiced law in Kansas City, Missouri at Polsinelli Shughart PC from
1999-2008, where he was a shareholder in the Tax Group and the Nonprofit Organizations
Group. Chris became a certified public accountant in 1993 and worked as an accountant
at McGladrey & Pullen, LLP in Des Moines, Iowa until 1995.
Chris served as the Co-Chair of the 2008 Heart of America Tax Institute in Kansas
City, Missouri, where he had been a member of the planning committee since 2002.
He is currently active in providing pro bono services for various nonprofit organizations.
Chris received his B.A. in Accounting from the University of Northern Iowa in
1993 and his M.B.A. and J.D.,
with distinction, in 1999 from the University of
Iowa. Chris is licensed in Missouri (1999), Kansas (2000) and Iowa (2009).
